Peter Pavlovich Ershov Foundation. Фонд Петра Павловича Ершова.

The Petr Pavlovich Ershov Foundation was established in 2014 in California, for the 200th anniversary of the author of the "Humpy Horse" ("The Little Humpbacked Horse"). The initiator of the creation of the Foundation is the great-great-granddaughter of the author of the fairy tale, Alla Ranskaya, MD epidemiologist by education who moved to California from Irkutsk, Siberia in 1994.

In California she worked for a while as a manager for Finlay Fine jewelry company. In 2010, while working as a volunteer at the Museum-Archive of Russian Culture in the Russian Center of San Francisco, she met representatives of the first waves of Russian emigration, and discovered how popular the fairy tale "Humpy Horse" was and remains at the present time in  the Russian diaspora.

The initiative to create the P.P. Ershov Foundation was supported by both representatives of the first wave of Russian emigration and Americans who joined the board of directors.

One of the directors was an American of Italian descent, lawyer Lawrence E. Alioto, who once visited the annual Russian Festival held at the Russian Center of San Francisco many years ago and fell in love with Russian culture. A polyglot fluent in English, Italian, and French,  Lawrence Alioto independently studied the Russian language and became a volunteer at the library of the Russian Center of San Francisco.

The board of directors of the Foundation also included a representative of the first wave of emigration, Nikolai Khidchenko, the grandson of Archpriest Nikolai Kolchev, a prominent figure in the Russian community of San Francisco and a member of many Russian organizations in the city.

While Nikolai Khidchenko, in Harbin, China, knew the fairy tale from childhood, Lawrence Alioto has relatively recently read "Humpy Horse" in its original Russian language and loved it.

It should be noted that Larry (Lawrence) Alioto read the fairy tale in its original form - in Russian. Sharing his impression of the story, he particularly enjoyed the episode with the "Underwater Court"! Well, it's not surprising - once a lawyer, always a lawyer!

Indeed, no one ever wondered why Petr Ershov described the maritime trial in such detail... Well, it's because Ershov himself studied jurisprudence! Remember, he attended the Philosophical-Legal Faculty of Saint Petersburg University, having enrolled in 1831!

The idea of organizing a celebration of the anniversary on a global scale was voiced at the IV Congress of "Compatriots," held in 2012 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The proposal to celebrate Ershov's 200th birthday anniversary in the Russian community of San Francisco was supported by the St. Petersburg Club in San Francisco, represented by its President, Mikhail Nikitich Tolstoy, the grandson of the famous Russian writer, Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy, and Director of the SF Public Library Foreign Literature Department, Mikhail Pashkov. Both, like P.P. Ershov, graduated from St. Petersburg University in Russia.

It should be noted that A. Ranskaya’s late husband, Leo A. Amadei, an American of Italian descent, was actively involved in the creation of this collection, as well as in the creation of the Foundation itself. A `Stanford graduate who majored in Electrical Engineering and worked with the founder of Silicon Valley, Dr. Shockley, Leo always expressed a keen interest in European, and especially Russian, history and literature.

The initiative to celebrate Ershov's anniversary in the Russian community of San Francisco soon went beyond a single community and grew into a city-wide event in San Francisco. The San Francisco Central Library had already held similar events, in particular, organizing an exhibition in 2014 dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the famous Ukrainian poet, Taras Shevchenko. "Why not celebrate Ershov's anniversary in a similar way?" The proposal was forwarded to the San Francisco Public Library management and accepted by them.

Фонд Петра Павловича Ершова был основан в 2014 году в Калифорнии к 200-летию автора "Конька-горбунка". Инициатором создания Фонда стала правнучка автора сказки Алла Ранская, врач гигиенист -эпидемиолог по образованию, которая переехала в Калифорнию из Иркутска, Сибирь в 1994 году.

В Калифорнии она некоторое время работала менеджером в ювелирной компании Finlay Fine.

 В 2010 году, работая волонтером в Музее-Архиве русской культуры в Русском центре Сан-Франциско, она познакомилась с представителями первой волны русской эмиграции и узнала, насколько популярна и остается сказка "Конек-горбунок" среди русской диаспоры.

 Инициативу создания Фонда П.П. Ершова поддержали как представители первой волны русской эмиграции, так и американцы, вошедшие в совет директоров. Одним из директоров был американец итальянского происхождения, адвокат Лоуренс Э. Алиото, который однажды посетил ежегодный Русский фестиваль в Русском центре Сан-Франциско и влюбился в русскую культуру. Владея английским, итальянским и французским языками, Лоуренс Алиото самостоятельно изучал русский язык и стал волонтером в библиотеке Русского центра Сан-Франциско.

 В совет директоров Фонда также вошел представитель первой волны эмиграции, Николай Хидченко, внук протоиерея Николая Колчева, видного деятеля русской общины Сан-Франциско и члена многих русских организаций в городе.

В то время как Николай Хидченко в Харбине, Китай, знал сказку с детства, Лоуренс Алиото относительно недавно прочитал "Конька-горбунка" на оригинальном русском языке и полюбил ее.

 Надо отметить, что Лэрри (Лоурэнс) Алиото прочел сказку в оригинале - на русском языке. Делясь впечатлением от сказки, от отметил, что особенно понравился ему эпизод с "Подводным судом"! Впрочем, не удивительно - юрист, он всегда юрист!

А ведь никто никогда не задумывался, почему так подробно Пётр Ершов описал морское судилище...Да потому, что Ершов тоже изучал юриспруденцию! Вспомним, что учился он на Философско-Юридическом факультете Санкт-Петербургского университета, поступив в него в 1831 году! Поблагодарим Лэрри Алиото, что привлек к этому моменту наше внимание!

Идея организации празднования юбилея в мировом масштабе была озвучена на IV Конгрессе "Соотечественников", проходившем в 2012 году в Санкт-Петербурге, Россия.

Предложение отпраздновать 200-летие П.П. Ершова в русской общине Сан-Франциско было поддержано Клубом Санкт-Петербурга в Сан-Франциско в лице его президента, Михаила Никитича Толстого, внука известного русского писателя Алексея Николаевича Толстого, и директора отдела иностранной литературы публичной библиотеки СФ, Михаила Пашкова. Оба, как и П.П. Ершов, окончили Санкт-Петербургский университет в России.

Стоит отметить, что покойный муж А. Ранской, Лео А. Амадей, американец итальянского происхождения, активно участвовал в создании этой коллекции, а также в создании самого Фонда. Выпускник Стэнфорда и работавший с основателем Кремниевой долины, доктором Вильямом Шокли, Лео всегда проявлял огромный интерес к европейской, особенно русской, истории и литературе.

Инициатива празднования юбилея Ершова в русской общине Сан-Франциско вскоре вышла за рамки одной общины и превратилась в мероприятие на уровне всего города Сан-Франциско. Центральная библиотека Сан-Франциско уже проводила похожие мероприятия, в частности, организовав выставку в 2014 году, посвященную 200-летию известного украинского поэта Тараса Шевченко. "Почему бы не отметить юбилей Ершова аналогичным образом?" Это предложение было передано руководству Публичной библиотеки Сан-Франциско и им было одобрено.
