Just last year, I unexpectedly learned about another translation of "The Humpbacked Horse" published in England in 1983. It's a pity I found out so late. In 2017, we published an article in the "Bibliography" magazine about English-language editions of the fairy tale, and this translation was unknown to us at the time. When I began researching the translator's biography - James Riordan, my regret about not knowing about this translation earlier intensified. And here's why... If this had happened a decade earlier, I would have definitely contacted the translator, not only because he chose to translate my great-great-grandfather's fairy tale, but also because he turned out to be an avid footballer, just like my husband! Moreover, they were born in the same month, same year, just three days apart... And Russia, as for the translator, was always of interest to my husband - while studying electrical engineering at Stanford, he simultaneously studied the history of European states. They would have had much to talk about...

However, I was able to contact Andrew Skilleter, the artist who illustrated the book. Now he's my friend on Facebook. I'll talk more about him below. Honestly, I thought he knew the translator personally, but alas... it was just a commission. One of the first works of the artist, who gained worldwide fame as an illustrator of "Doctor Who"!

This small-format edition of Pyotr Yershov's fairy tale was published by "Hamlyn" (London-New York-Sydney-Toronto) and printed in Italy. The translator's free interpretation, indicating the author of the fairy tale, but distorting his name - "Based on the Russian fairy tale by Pavel Yershov". Petr Pavlovich's patronymic is given as his first name...

The book was released in the "Bumblebee Books" series - a collection of illustrated short stories for young children.

But let's start with the translator...

James Riordan - an English novelist, radio presenter, sports historian, and Russia specialist.

He was born on October 10, 1936, in Portsmouth. James Riordan learned Russian during his service in the Royal Air Force from 1955 to 1957. In 1960, he graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Russian Studies, then gained a teaching qualification at the London Institute of Education.

In 1963, Riordan studied at the Higher Party School of Communists in Moscow; he was a convinced communist and one of the few English students at this school.

In his autobiography "Comrade Jim: The Spy Who Played for Spartak," he tells about his life and studies in Moscow and his games for Moscow's Spartak in 1963. (Comrade Jim: The Spy Who Played for Spartak, Harper Perennial, 2009).

Returning to England, he became a lecturer at Bradford University, then moved to the University of Surrey in Guildford, where he became head of the Russian department and was appointed personal professor. In 1980, he was an attaché of the British Olympic Association at the Olympics in Moscow. He has an honorary doctorate from the University of Grenoble and was president (2003-2005) and later a member of the European Committee for the History of Sport.

His autobiography "Comrade Jim: The Spy Who Played for Spartak" was published in 2008.

His 2008 novel "The Sniper" tells the story of Soviet sniper Tanya Chernova and is based on Riordan's interview with the heroine.

He also conducted research on the "Match of Death" - an unofficial football match in 1943 between Soviet POWs and Wehrmacht soldiers - and wrote a scholarly article and a children's novel "The Match of Death" on this topic.

Among his published books: "Sport in Soviet Society: Development of Sport and Physical Education in Russia and the USSR" (Cambridge, 1977), "Sport in European Cultures" (2002), Russian folk tales, translations of works by Chingiz Aitmatov and Chekhov, and, as now known, the translation of P.P. Yershov's fairy tale "The Humpbacked Horse".

James Riordan passed away quite early, at the age of 76, on February 11, 2012.

I was helped to contact the illustrator of the fairy tale, Andrew Skilleter, by Facebook! Andrew told me that he received the commission to illustrate this edition from the British publishing house Hamlyn Books - at that time he was working on several projects with them. This was a unique case for him and not typical of his work - many illustrations were done quickly in a free style. In such work, the illustrator does not have contact with the authors. Andrew received the commission and worked with the art director of that time, and was not acquainted with James Riordan. However, he had heard of him as an author of retellings of many fairy tales for publications.

Andrew Skilleter - a well-known British illustrator, working mainly in traditional techniques for decades. Since childhood, he dreamed of becoming an illustrator, his early inspiration were the best British comic artists, whose era of prosperity ended by the late 1960s.

Andrew is known for his long professional association with "Doctor Who" and BBC as an illustrator of works of mystery and imagination. At BBC, he created covers for Radio Collection covers - "The Chronicles of Narnia", "Journey into Space", and works by Tolkien. His illustrations for "Doctor Who" were extremely popular in the 1980s and 1990s. He created more than forty covers for "Doctor Who" from Target Books, popular posters, official "Doctor Who" calendars, the legendary "Cybermen" book with David Banks as Cyber Leader, the iconic cover for "Radio Times" for the episode "The Five Doctors", BBC VHS covers for "Doctor Who", and covers for the "Doctor Who Virgin New Adventures". His works were collected in the book "Blacklight", dedicated to the 15th anniversary of his "Doctor Who" art, published by Virgin in 1995, and in the collection of his Dalek art "Exterminart!" in 2021.

Two volumes have already been released of what will be a trilogy, featuring not only most of his works on "Doctor Who", but also a number of works from his numerous works in the genres of science fiction and fantasy.

Когда занялась изучением биографии автора перевода - Джеймса Риордана, чувство сожаления о том, что не узнала об этом переводе ранее, усилилось. И вот по какой причине...Если бы это случилось на десяток лет ранее, я бы непременно связалась с автором перевода, не только потому, что он выбрал для перевода сказку моего прапрадеда, но и потому, что он оказался заядлым футболистом, ккк мой муж! Да и родились они с один месяц, в один год, с разницей только в три дня...Да и Россия, как и для автора перевода, для моего мужа всегда представляла интерес - обучаясь в Стэнфорде на electrical engineering, он одновременно изучал историю Европейских государств. Было бы им о чем поговорить...

А вот с художником, иллюстрировавшим эту книгу - Andrew Skilleter мне удалось связаться. Теперь он мой друг на ФБ. О нем расскажу ниже. Честно говоря, думала, что он знал лично автора перевода, но увы...это был просто заказ. Это одна из первых работ художника, получившего мировую известность как иллюстратор "Doctor Who"!

Это небольшого формата издание сказки Петра Ершова вышло в издательстве "Hamlin" (London-NewYork-Sydney-Toronto) , отпечатано в Италии. Джеймс Риордан (James Riordan)  - английский писатель-романист, радиоведущий, историк спорта и специалист по России.

Родился он 10 October 1936 года в Portsmouth Портсмуте ( Portsmouth). Джеймс Риордан научился говорить по-русски во время службы в Королевских ВВС с 1955 по 1957 годы.
