Celebration of the 210th Anniversary of P.P. Ershov’s Birth in Siberia

It seems like we just recently celebrated the 200th anniversary of Peter Pavlovich Ershov… On this day in 2015, the first exhibition dedicated to him and his fairy tale The Little Humpbacked Horse opened at the San Francisco Public Library.

And now, we are marking his 210th anniversary! All of Siberia is celebrating, though due to a number of difficult circumstances, we have postponed the California celebration until the second half of the year.

But let’s return to Siberia! Today, in Ershov’s hometown of Ishim, the All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference "The Ershov Code: A Genius with a Siberian Soul" has opened. Unfortunately, I did not participate in person, but I sent my congratulations to the organizers and participants. These words were shared at the conference’s opening:

*“I wholeheartedly congratulate the organizers and participants of this conference dedicated to the 210th anniversary of Peter Pavlovich Ershov!

As Ershov’s great-great-granddaughter, born in Siberia but having lived in the United States for over 30 years, I closely follow everything happening in my great ancestor’s homeland. It means the world to me that the people of Siberia cherish Ershov’s memory, honor his works, and continue studying them. This is not only a sign of respect for Ershov’s legacy but also a contribution to the preservation of Russian culture and traditions.

In turn, I also strive to promote Ershov’s work, especially his immortal fairy tale The Little Humpbacked Horse. Over the years, I have published articles about Ershov’s life and fairy tale in American journals and newspapers. In 2014, we established the Peter Pavlovich Ershov Foundation, which organizes exhibitions, lectures, and other events dedicated to his life and work.

An exhibition of quilts inspired by the fairy tale was held at the San Francisco Public Library, featuring pieces collected from around the world by Anna Glazunova, head of the Siberian Palette club in Tyumen. Currently, the Peter Pavlovich Ershov Foundation is finalizing an English-language edition of The Little Humpbacked Horse, accompanied by photographs of these quilts.

Interest in The Little Humpbacked Horse is growing in Siberia. In Tyumen, a whole series of albums has been published by art historian Natalia Sezova, dedicated to Ershov and his fairy tale. One of them, Around the World with The Little Humpbacked Horse, features our own review of English-language editions of the story.

On March 6, an exhibition of illustrations for the fairy tale will open in Tobolsk. Our family—Zeya Ivanovna Kuzmenko-Ranskaya, Ershov’s great-granddaughter, myself, Alla Ranskaya, his great-great-granddaughter, and our three-times great-grandson, Herman Gladkov—has donated copies of illustrated books from our collection to the exhibition.

Another important aspect of our work is participation in conferences across Russia—in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Turinsk. Our main research focus has been on the genealogy of Ershov’s wife, Elena Nikolaevna Cherkasova-Ershova.

Through these efforts, our cooperation with Russia continues to strengthen.

On March 6, the 210th anniversary of Ershov’s birth, an exhibition dedicated to The Little Humpbacked Horse will open at the Tobolsk Museum-Reserve. At the opening, a video greeting from my mother, Ershov’s great-granddaughter, and me will be shown. I will share the video after it has been viewed by Ershov’s fellow countrymen, the people of Tobolsk, who to this day honor the memory of the author of The Little Humpbacked Horse. My deepest gratitude to them!

Казалось бы, совсем недавно праздновали мы 200-оетнмй юбилей Петра Павловича Ершова…В этот день, в 2015 году, открылась первая выставка, посвященная ему и его сказке "Конёк-Горбунок" в Центральной библиотеке Сан Франциско…

И вот уже отмечаем 210-лет! Празднует вся Сибирь, а вот мы, в связи с рядом сложных обстоятельств, празднование в Калифорнии перенесли на вторую половину года…

Но вернемся в Сибирь! Сегодня на родине Ершова, в г. Ишиме открылась Всероссийская научно-практическая конференция "Код Ершова. Гений с сибирской душой". Мне не удалось принять участие в конференции, но я послали поздравления организаторам и участникам конференции. Сегодня эти слова прозвучали на открытии:

" От всей души поздравляю организаторов и участников конференции, посвященной 210-летнему юбилею Петра Павловича Ершова!

Как праправнучка Ершова, родившаяся в Сибири, но уже более 30 лет живущая в США, я с большим вниманием слежу за тем, что происходит на родине моего великого предка. Мне бесконечно дорого, что сибиряки хранят память о Ершове, чтят его творчество и продолжают его изучать. Это не только знак уважения к наследию Ершова, но и вклад в сохранение русской культуры и традиций.

В свою очередь, я также стараюсь популяризировать творчество Ершова, особенно его бессмертную сказку Конёк-Горбунок. В разные годы я публиковала статьи о жизни Ершова и о его сказке в американских журналах и газетах, а в 2014 году мы создали Фонд Петра Павловича Ершова, который организует выставки, лекции и другие мероприятия, посвященные его жизни творчеству.

В Центральной библиотеке Сан-Франциско была организована выставка квилтов по сказке, собранная руководителем тюменского клуба Сибирская палитра, Анной Глазуновой по всему миру.

В настоящее время Фонд Петра Павловича Ершова завершает работу над англоязычным изданием Конька-Горбунка с фотографиями этих квилтов.

Интерес к Коньку-Горбунку в Сибири растет. Так в Тюмени была опубликована целая серия альбомов, подготовленных искусствоведом Наталией Сезёвой, посвященных Ершову и его сказке. В одном из них - "Вокруг света с "Коньком-Горбунком" - был опубликован подготовленный нами обзор англоязычных изданий сказки.

В Тобольске 6 марта открывается выставка иллюстраций сказки, и наша семья - правнучка Петра Павловича Ершова - Зея Ивановна Кузьменко-Ранская, праправнучка поэта - Алла Ранская и трижды правнук, Герман Гладков - передала в дар копии иллюстраций их книг нашей коллекции.

Еще одной стороной нашей деятельности является участие в конференциях в разных городах России - Москве, Санкт-Петербурге, Туринске. Основной темой исследований является родословная По линии жены Ершова - Елены Николаевны Черкасовой-Ершовой.

Таким образом наше сотрудничество с Россией укрепляется.

А 6-го марта, в день 210-летней годовщины со дня рождения Ершова, открывается выставка по сказке "Конёк-Горбунок" в Тобольском музее-заповеднике. На открытии выставке будет показано видео поздравление от нас с мамой - правнучкой Петра Ершова. Его я выставлю уже после того, как его увидят земляки Ершова-тоболяки, которые и по сей день чтут память автора "Конька-Горбунка". Низкий им поклон!
