And once again—about the ballet…

Another new edition of the fairy tale has arrived, published in Moscow to mark the 195th anniversary of The Little Humpbacked Horse. The title is: “The Little Humpbacked Horse” by Pyotr Ershov and Boris Messerer. The book features illustrations based on stage sets and costume sketches from Rodion Shchedrin’s ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse. This production was the second staging of the ballet, created a hundred years after the original 1864 version, which featured music by Cesare Pugni.

The foreword is titled: “Pyotr Ershov — Author of the Most Enigmatic Fairy Tale in Russian Literature.”

The dust jacket includes a short description of the artist:

“Boris Messerer (b. 1933) — painter and graphic artist, stage designer and architect by both training and creative instinct. Surrounded by art since birth — ballet, theater, and therefore fairy tales — he knows how to present these tales to us, the audience and the readers.”

So who is Boris Messerer?

Due to his family background, his life was closely intertwined with the Bolshoi Theatre: his father, Asaf Messerer, was a famous ballet dancer, choreographer, and teacher; his wife, Nina Chistova, was a ballerina; and his cousin was the legendary Maya Plisetskaya.

Ballet has always been his great love.

“Still, I love — selfishly, perhaps — the genre where the artist is most visible. In ballet, the artist is more visible than in a dramatic performance,” Messerer once said.

He was born in Moscow on March 15, 1933, into a family of artists: his father was Asaf Messerer (1903–1992), and his mother was actress Anel Sudakevich (1906–2002).

He graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute and went on to work as a production designer for theaters across Moscow, including the Bolshoi Theatre.

By 2008, his scenic designs had been featured in more than 150 opera, ballet, and drama productions.

In 2014, Boris Messerer published the book-album “The Theater of Boris Messerer,” which includes sketches of his stage and costume designs from 1961 to 2014.

The premiere of The Little Humpbacked Horse ballet set to Rodion Shchedrin’s music took place on March 4, 1960, with sets by designer Boris Volkov. But it was in Boris Messerer’s stage design that the ballet was reimagined and presented to the public on March 25, 1999.

And now — here is the book, in which we see the stage and costume designs that once captured the hearts of the audience.

И снова о балете…Прибыло очередное издание сказки сказки, вышкдшеее в Москве к 195-летней годовщине "Конька-Горбунка". Название "Конёк-Горбунок" Петра Ершова и Бориса Мессерера. В книге в качестве иллюстраций использованы декорации и эскизы к балету Р.Щедрина "Конёк-Горбунок". Это уже вторая постановка балета, проявившая 100 лет спустя после оригинальной, 1864 года с музыкой Цезаря Пуни.

Предилслоыие озаглавлено: "Пётр Ершов - автор самой загадочной сказки в русской литературе".

На суперобложке - несколько слов о художнике: "Борис Мессерер (р. 1933) - живописец и график, художник театра, архитектор, как по образованию, так и по созиданию и выстраиванию сцены, полотна, листа бумаги. Человек, с рождения окруженный искусством - балетом, театром, а значит, и сказкой, он знает, как показать эту сказку нам, зрителям и читателям".

Кто же этот человек -  Борис Мессерер? Жизнь его была связана в силу семейных обстоятельств с Большим театром: там работали его отец Асаф Мессерер — знаменитый артист балета, балетмейстер, педагог, его супруга балерина Нина Чистова и, наконец, его знаменитая кузина Майя Плисецкая. Балетные спектакли - его любовь: "Все-таки я люблю — конечно, своекорыстно — то, где художник больше виден. В балете он виден больше, чем в драматическом спектакле".

Родился он в Москве, 15 марта 1933 года в семье балетмейстера Асафа Мессерера (1903—1992) и актрисы Аннкль Судакевич (1906—2002).

Окончил Московский архитектурный институт. Как художник-постановщик Мессерер участвовал в создании спектаклей в разных театрах Москвы, в том числе и в Большом.

К 2008 году среди сценографических работ Мессерера значилось более ста пятидесяти оперных, балетных и драматических спектаклей.

В 2014 году Борис Мессерер выпустил книгу-альбом «Театр Бориса Мессерера», в которую вошли эскизы декораций и костюмов к театральным постановкам, подготовленными им с 1961 по 2014 год.

Премьера балета "Конек-Горбунок" на музыку Щедрина прошла 4 марта 1960 года, оформителем спектакля был тогда художник Борис Волков. А вот в оформлении художника Бориса Мессерера балет предстал перед зрителями 25 марта 1999 года. И вот - перед нами книга, в которых мы увидим декорации и костюмы, которые покорили тогда зрителей.
